Moving to Micro.blog

If everything works out OK, you will find my new Micro.blog on taonaw.com instead of this one. But, since you’re here, you’re probably looking for a “final words” kind of post. This is not it.

I didn’t stop blogging. As a matter of fact, my ramblings are worse (better?) than ever. There’s the wiki, TAONAH (I have a thing for naming conventions, leave me alone), and the new blog, which is the home of TAONAW now. My writing has split into two: if you want the long-form how-to stuff I used to write here, the wiki is what you’re after. If you’re looking for frequent updates and RSS, head to the blog.

OK, but what happened? Why did I stop updating this blog?

I got tired of maintaining it. Hugo has never been easy for me to grasp, even after three years, and I often end up with broken links/images/CSS.

When I started working with my wiki, I discovered how easy it could be to maintain a knowledge database. I tried maintaining a blog on the wiki for a couple of weeks, but it didn’t fit there. The wiki is a wiki, and that’s a good thing.

I found Micro.blog by chance, reading posts on Mastodon. Its blogging community and natural mix of Mastodon-like posts and blogs were captivating. I got hooked. Micro.blog’s blogs are built with Hugo, and Since I came from one, I managed to tweak the theme and the CSS to my liking. At the same time, Micro.blog removes the need for Gitlab and Netlify, which is overkill for my needs.

As for the content in this blog, it’s not going anywhere for now. The repository is still up on GitLab and backed up in several places. I hope to migrate some of the old posts over to the wiki and the blog.
